2016 Family League Community Service Award Winners

Family League has selected its community service award winners for 2016. We will honor each of them and recognize their outstanding work to remove barriers to opportunity for children and youths in Baltimore at our Annual Meeting on October 20, 2016.

This year’s winners are:

BERNARD “JACK” YOUNG, Baltimore City Council President: Civic Leadership Award recipient for steadfast leadership in support Baltimore’s children and youth and his leadership role supporting landmark legislation passed by the City Council to create a new dedicated source of funding source for children and youth programming.

ERICKA ALSTON-BUCK, Founder and Executive Director, Penn North Kids Safe Zone: President’s Award for her leadership in creating a safe haven for children to learn, have, fun, relax, and build relationships with caring adults, in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death.

OFFICER BETTY COVINGTON, Founder and Executive Director, Girls Expecting More Success (G.E.M.S.): Champion for Change Award for creating an organization that recognizes the need to support, encourage, and challenge adolescent girls in Baltimore, and inspire them to succeed.

NIKKIA ROWE, Principal, Baltimore Renaissance Academy: Community Partnership Award for her exceptional work on behalf of Renaissance Academy, where she has overseen the effort to build successful partnerships with dozens of organizations, including, notably, the Promise Heights-University of Maryland School of Social Work.
