Baltimore Business Journal Article: YouthWorks helps city students follow their dreams — and overcome expectations

The story of four YouthWorks participants and how the city’s career training program has prepared them for college and beyond. Every day around 8 a.m. thousands of Baltimore residents roll out of bed to jump in the car, hop on the metro or grab the bus to work. This summer, there were quite a few fresh faces added to the regular morning crowd. A record 8,300 young men and women ages 14-21 were placed in local private, nonprofit and city and state government internships this summer through the city’s YouthWorks program. The 20-year-old program, run by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, places each teen in a 5-week position at one of over 900 participating work sites.
